Advanced Biblical Hebrew

Prerequisites: The ability to read and understand Tanakh in Hebrew, using grammar book and dictionary.
 
Students will practice reading texts from the Tanakh and will learn and review grammar points and vocabulary as they arise. We will focus on narrative portions of the Tanakh rather than poetry.

Beginning Biblical Hebrew

Prerequisite: Must be able to sound out Hebrew script (with vowels).
 
Students will begin to learn the vocabulary and structure of Biblical Hebrew, and begin reading small blocks of biblical text. Students must be able to sound out Hebrew before the course begins, but do not need to understand any Hebrew beforehand. Please take the Hebrew Marathon if you are not confident about your reading skills.

Beginning Modern Hebrew

Prepare to travel to Israel by studying Modern Hebrew with Dr. Abby Limmer. Abby is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Near Eastern Studies. She taught Hebrew there for 4 years, and has been teaching Hebrew at ASU’s Critical Languages Institute for the past six years.

Hebrew Reading Boot Camp

Get a head start on this year’s Hebrew courses! Hebrew Reading Boot Camp will be a fun and interactive way to brush up on Hebrew reading skills and move towards fluid reading. Participants will practice techniques that build familiarity and confidence with Hebrew texts. Whatever your personal goals, reading comfortably can make prayer, study, and comprehension more accessible and satisfying. An important prerequisite is the Hebrew Marathon, or knowing the Hebrew aleph bet and vowels.

In Intermediate Biblical Hebrew, we will continue reviewing grammar and vocabulary from previous semesters and move on to reading Biblical Hebrew texts from the Tanakh in addition to the textbook.

Intermediate Modern Hebrew

Students will continue to progress in Hebrew, gaining vocabulary and complexity. Utilizing their Hebrew books and connected online activities, their Hebrew conversational skills will become more useful over the course of the year. Students can already ask for directions; by year’s end they will understand the answers.

Learn to Chant Torah

Do you already know how to read Hebrew?  
Has it been a few years since your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or are you planning to be Bar or Bat Mitzvah as an adult? Take the next step in liturgical musical knowledge and learn the trope for the Torah! Join Marjorie Hochberg on five consecutive Wednesdays in August and September to learn the special cantillation for the Torah. This chanting class is open to anyone who can read Hebrew and who is moderately musical. It is not necessary to read Western music to be in the class, but it may be helpful.

Prayerbook Hebrew

Learn reading and comprehension skills for Jewish participation, prayer, and vocabulary. This class is a natural follow-up for anyone who has taken Hebrew Marathon or has a basic knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet, vowels, and pronunciation.
