Saturday, June 8, 2019 5 Sivan 5779

8:00 PM - 11:00 PMRubin Family Sanctuary & Religious School Auditorium

The awe and mystery of the revelation of Torah at Sinai are celebrated with Torah study and everyone’s favorite dairy dessert at the Tikkun L’eil Shavu’ot Service, “All-Night” Study session and Ice Cream Social, Saturday, June 8th at  8:00 pm, at Temple Emanu-El.

The evening begins with the brief, music-filled Shavu’ot Festival Services led by Rabbi Batsheva Appel and Cantorial Soloist Marjorie Hochberg, followed by an Ice Cream Social, with everyone present enjoying luscious ice cream with all kinds of delicious toppings, as well as other dairy desserts. We will have some vegan options as well. Then, we’ll study Torah all night (well, until about 11:00 pm).

There is no charge for Tikkun L’eil Shavu’ot, but all are invited to bring a dairy dessert to share. Please call (520) 327-4501 or register below to let us know that you’ll be coming!

In 16th century Tzafat, the mystic Shelomo Alkabez introduced the practice of studying Torah and other religious texts all night long on the eve of Shavu’ot, the Jewish festival celebrating the revelation of the Torah at Sinai.  Since then, Tikkun L’eil Shavu’ot, the practice of all-night study in preparation for the festival, has been an integral part of this most mystical of holidays.  According to Jewish legend, all living creatures were silent when the Ten Commandments were declaimed by God at Sinai. Since all animals heard the word of God, tradition holds that none should die for this celebration, so Shavu’ot is a dairy (meatless) holiday. Dairy desserts are also favored on Shavu’ot because the words of Torah are “like milk and honey.”

Sorry, Registration has ended.
