Dear Congregants,

We hope that this letter finds you in good health and cheer as the summer of 2019 begins. We are writing to share news that affects Temple Emanu-El and the wider Jewish community.

Rabbi Batsheva Appel informed us of her decision not to seek renewal of her contract with Temple Emanu-El, which is set to expire on June 30, 2020.

We've met this unexpected news with respect and a sense of loss. We are deeply grateful for the work that Rabbi Appel has done at Temple Emanu-El and in the larger Jewish community in our region. We've enjoyed the wisdom, work ethic, and love for Judaism that she brings to many walks of temple life, from worship services to teaching to pastoral care. We value the spiritual leadership that she will continue to bring to our congregation in the coming year.

The Temple Emanu-El Board of Directors has begun to develop a transition plan. We are committed to continued excellence in Jewish experiences and lifelong learning, and to keeping the well-being of you, our members and friends, at the forefront of our priorities. We will continue to move forward on a path to strengthen Reform Judaism in Southern Arizona.

We will follow up with more information by July 15.

We welcome hearing from you now and at any time in the future. There is a new, dedicated email address that you may use to relay your thoughts on this and related topics: JewishTucson@gmail.com.

Warm regards,

Mona Gibson and Scott Arden
